How to dictate messages in Discord with your voice (Windows and Mac)

In short
Discord has no dictation, and voice messages can only be sent from the mobile app: on a computer you can only listen to them. To write with your voice on a computer, use your computer's dictation (Windows + H on Windows, or Mac dictation) or an app like Loro: click in the message box, hold Ctrl + Win (fn on a Mac), talk and let go. The message shows up without filler words, and Loro doesn't send it.
Discord has no dictation
Discord doesn't have a feature for dictating messages. The closest thing is voice messages, and according to Discord's help center you can only send them from the mobile app; on a computer you can listen to them. And in a busy server, a written message can be read in seconds and found later with search.
Option 1: your computer's dictation
It works in the Discord app, in Discord in the browser and in any other app.
- On Windows: click in the message box and press Windows + H. To stop, click the microphone on the voice typing bar. It uses Microsoft's online speech recognition, so it needs the internet. How to use Windows voice typing.
- On a Mac: turn on dictation in Apple menu › System Settings › Keyboard › Dictation, then start it with the Microphone key or a shortcut you choose. To stop, press the Microphone key or your shortcut again. Depending on the language and your Mac, it may need the internet; that same setting tells you. How to use Mac dictation.
Good for: dictating in any app without installing anything. Missing: removing filler words. It types exactly what you say: if you said "um", it types it, and if you corrected yourself mid-sentence, both versions stay. The exception is Windows "fluid dictation", which cleans up filler words in English on Copilot+ PCs.
Option 2: Loro
Loro types what you said, minus the "um"s and the half-sentence you corrected.
- Download Loro for free for Windows or Mac.
- Click in the message box, in a channel or a DM.
- Hold Ctrl + Win (fn on a Mac) and talk.
- Let go. The message appears. Check it and send it yourself: Loro pastes the text and never presses Enter.
In the Discord desktop app, when you're online, Loro writes in a chat tone: short sentences, no greetings or sign-offs you didn't say, and no final period if it's a single short sentence. In Discord in the browser it still types, just without the chat tone.
For example, say you moderate a gaming community and need to post a schedule change. You say:
um, hey everyone, Saturday's tournament starts at eight, no, nine p.m., uh, and sign-ups close Friday
And Loro types:
Hey everyone, Saturday's tournament starts at 9 p.m. Sign-ups close Friday.
When you're online, it understands that "no, nine" corrects the time.
Good for: dictating in Discord and any other app without filler words. Missing: it doesn't come installed (you have to download it), and the chat tone and self-corrections need the internet; offline, it still types and removes filler words. Replying by looking at your screen is Pro-only, and the free plan dictates 2,000 words a week.
For announcements, rules and moderation
If you run a community on Discord, you write a lot: announcements, server rules, answers to the same questions, explanations when you moderate. With Loro you say them the way you'd explain them to the community, and they come out without the "um"s.
- Announcements and schedule changes, like the one in the example.
- Server rules. Dictate one rule at a time and read them all over before you post.
- Answers to the questions people always ask. With Loro Pro, hold Ctrl + Alt (Control + Option on a Mac) and say "reply to this message": Loro looks at your screen and writes the reply the way you would. It needs the internet, and the screenshot isn't stored.
And when you're on a call in Discord, Loro can take notes too, without a bot. Tell the others you're taking notes.
